Who is the best escape artist?
When it comes to Houdini escapes or even escaping from an escape room which is super popular currently the question that just won’t go away or vanish (ok magician pun there) is “Who is the Best Escape Artist?” and that is a tough question to answer in the sense what is the best Cola soft drink? Coke, or Pepsi? it very often comes down to simply a subjective personal preference, however in this case there might be a strong argument to suggest that The Best Living Escape Artist is Michael Griffin.
The eyes say it all: Escape Artist Michael Griffin - “Do With Me What You Will”
We are qualifying this with the world living, because in history the nod for best probably has to go to Harry Houdini. He was the magician who combined the PR style of P.T. Barnum with the chutzpah of Evel Knievel and single handedly made a very little known branch of magic become a major entertainment drawing card of its time and still to this day a fascinating art form when performed correctly and in the hands of true showman. Sure, we always see a “big name” magician performing an escape on the latest TV special and that’s because, well frankly, most magic is boring on TV and ratings are king and to get ratings too often the magician has to perform a “quasi-escape” meaning the magician is usually placed into some over the top nonsensical James Bond like contrivance and somehow must get out and does with the magic of editing and paid actor stooges all coming together to make a great tv escape hoping to leave the viewer at home breathless and the magician of the moment on tv as a demi-god because wow, he just cheated death.
The reality is sadly totally opposite, the magician, whether it’s somebody like Criss Angel, David Blaine, Penn & Teller or even David Copperfield goes thru the acting to convince the audience that they are escape artists and not just mere magicians, they do the escape on tv and with all the power of the editors and camera cuts and special angles it does make good tv and that’s all it is, TV, an illusion right before our eyes, but are any of them real escape artists that can be compared to Houdini?, No.
Based on performing real escapes with real consequences and real sweat and physical taxing the argument is that the Best Living Escape Artist is Michael Griffin and maybe just a little spooky coincidence (okay a huge spooky coincidence) is that in Houdini’s silent movie The Man From Beyond which deals with being frozen alive for 100 years there are only 2 dates in the entire movie: Houdini’s birthday and Griffin’s birthday separated by 100 years (que the Twilight Zone theme now).
Like Houdini, Griffin has made a reputation for challenging the World to keep him prisoner to the tune of if he cant get out he could forfeit $100,000.00. Houdini was known for his unique physicality and Griffin with his physicality has been able to withstand submersion under the ice in a dramatic sub-zero December escape in Cincinnati, OH doing an escape for real that legend says Houdini did and actually never happened. It’s this belief in himself that Houdini must’ve possessed as well that has led Michael Griffin to re-write the rules about escapology and create genuine one of a kind masterpieces.

Hanging for hundreds of years was an accepted way to execute prisoners and even up to a few years ago recently Saddam Hussein was put to death at the end of a rope, Michael Griffin became the only human to survive and escape an actual hanging from the back of a horse, his hands tied behind his back and his nec secured by a 13 knot hangman’s noose tied to a gallows above. Griffin escaped and when asked how said “I knew it would be hard, but I said I’d do it” he did and became the bearer of a new standard in modern Escape Artistry. The lid is then locked down with multiple padlocks and the whole chamber is placed into a black isolation room on stage. Columbus, OH- (May 29) 2x Winner of TV’s World Magic Awards, Michael Griffin Escape Artist (http://www.escapeguy.com) appeared on America’s Got Talent Monday night inviting Howard Stern the newest judge to tie him up on stage. The King of all media admittedly didn’t know knots while bantering with Sharon Osborne. The Boss of Bondage looked at Howard’s handy work and began to shake violently, falling over in his chair, slithering out of the ropes in 26 seconds. He did not escape to the next round and is challenging Americas Got Talent to a live REMATCH.
Speculation of possible sabotage surfaced within hours of the videos hitting the web. According to Writingshares.com “I think it’s possible the show sabotaged him on purpose because they want to feature that kid act from St. Louis that was seen in the previews.” Griffin, remarked later that he wasn’t happy not being allowed to do his more famous signature acts, instead being forced to perform the rope challenge, insisting that if you don’t get tied well by someone the whole thing unravels. The Escape Artist is not ruling out a “Do Over” match with America’s Got Talent.

On the road while appearing at a mall in Alabama I was offering our challenge of $1,000.00 to anyone who can tie me up with rope preventing my escape. My assistant (wife at the time) came up to me and said Mike there is a scary looking nutjob guy who wants to tie you up, stay away from him he looks dangerous. Well I'm thinking hey this could be good on stage. I went up and met him, yup, he was wierd (kinda talked and looked at me like that kid in christmas story ralphie meets in line to see santa, that says i like santa). I asked this guy do you know how to tie people up? he said oh yes I like to tie people up. I facetiously asked him did you happen to bring any rope? he said yes, i have my rope in the car. I said OK......
So, the time came for him to come up on stage and tie me up, he immediately had me lay down in a hogtie fashion and immediately threw the rope under his foot to pull out slack, he grabbed my arms and started to truss me up so severely and quickly that he could only do so with much practice. I was nervous. I couldnt feel my hands, couldnt feel my feet, every move that I made pulled harder on the ropes around my neck connected to the ankles and hands,,,I thouhgt I was finally beat.
I think I passed out for a few minutes. I remember hearing a lady cry, I realized she was saying go michael go. I got back to work and finally, I dont know how but I got out. What was wierd was the local sheriffs were on stage during the roping up part and one deputy stayed up with me, I had no idea why, I also noticed the rope tie wierdo was gone and one of the sheriffs followed him.
After I got out, the show was cut short. The deputies were all over me asking questions like did you know that guy, have you met, did you set this up? I kept asking why? I dont understand. Then the bombshell.....
The deputies said that over the course of the last school season a couple of coeds had been found dead and tied up exactly like I was, same exact rope and found in trunks of cars. I just went numb, my wife was in shock. The duputies said this was like an old movie in which the badguys ego compels him to reappear and show off.
I heard back from the deputies a few months later, they had caught him and were sure he was their man.......This was one of the wierdest gigs ever

The Great Escape Artist insists He's not the DEVIL
It was Sunday evening (April 15) and the Levy County Fair had started to wind down from its four-day whirlwind of fun in Williston.
Griffin was among the performers who helped fair guests have a blast. He astounded audiences each time he wriggled out of a straightjacket, removed his hands from mitts made to stay on insane people, and quickly released himself from being tied by rope at his wrists. He told the audience his feats were pure muscle and movement.
The escape artist assured them there was no magic or demons or wizardry involved. He said this because, according to him, when he escaped from a trunk in a less civilized country, they wanted to kill him for using demons to let him out.

Why naked? Griffin blasts Criss Angel who is rumored to rely on camera tricks, special edits and paid actors to fool the public. Griffin will perform “naked” using no camera tricks or stooges while he challenges death in a game of Russian Roulette using 4 gold revolvers. Griffin, who is appearing with rapper Lil Wyte is also offering his $1,000.00 Challenge to anyone at the concert who can tie him up with rope and if he cant get out they get to keep the $1,000.00.
